In 1920, the Russian writer Isaac Babel wanders the countryside with the Red Cavalry. Seventy years later, a mysterious KGB agent spies on a woman in Dresden and falls in love. In 2010, an aircraft carrying most of the Polish government crashes in the Russian city of Smolensk. Set in Russia over the course of 90 years, this thrilling and epic play by Rajiv Joseph (Atlantic’s Guards at the Taj, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) traces the stories of eight men and women connected by history, myth and conspiracy theories.
Among the cast for this reading was Irish actor Fintan McKeown, known from Game of Thrones and Star Trek: Voyager.
Rajiv Joseph debuted as a playwright in 2006 and has stated that the three years he served in the Peace Corps in Senegal had a big impact on him becoming a writer. In 2010 he was a Pulitzer Price finalist for Bengal tiger at the Baghdad Zoo and five years later he received the Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award for his play Guards at the Taj.
Describe the night is based on actual historical events and people and had its world premiere in December 2017 at Atlantic Theater Company in New York.
