SELLING KABUL
By Sylvia Khoury
Reading December 6th 2021
Taroon once served as an interpreter for the U.S. military in Afghanistan. Now it is 2013, and the Americans — and their promises of safety — have begun to withdraw. Taroon lives in hiding from the Taliban in his sister Afiya’s home in Kabul while his brother-in-law Jawid works to protect him from dangers lurking outside the apartment walls. On the eve of his son’s birth, Taroon must remain in his sister’s apartment, or risk his life to see his child. With shattering precision, Sylvia Khoury’s tense drama examines loyalty, empty promises and what it means to be left behind.
Selling Kabul was the recipient of the 2018 L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award, administered by Williamstown Theatre Festival where the play world premiered in 2019. A few weeks ago the play had its New York premiere at Playwrights Horizons.
“Sylvia Khoury pulls nifty narrative and stylistic jumps out of her hat, and it works.” — The New York Times
